GETTING PHYSICAL WITH DANIEL GORDON
Daniel Gordon was born in boston in 1980. he earned a Bachelor of Arts from Bard College in 2004, and a Master of Fine Arts from the Yale School of Art in 2006. He lives and works in Brooklyn.
Daniel Gordon approaches photography with the sensibilities and concerns of an object maker, and the relationship between sculptural and photographic forms is a major force at play in his work. He calls our attention to the surface of the paper, emphatically challenging the notion of a photograph as a window into the world.
The imperfections visible in his constructions are the antithesis of the glossy perfection of so much photography today. Instead he shares an affinity with painters or sculptors - those that spend time making things in the studio.
Daniel Gordon is a collector of sorts. He makes his pictures through a process of acquisition over time, rephotographing and altering existing images.
He cuts apart, fractures, and reunites fragments of completely unrelated images to create bizarre, whimsical, and sometimes disturbing new images, which take on a different meaning from their original use. The strange and unnatural aspect of the works stimulates both attraction and repulsion. His hybrid figures are a deliberate de-canonisation of feminine beauty and reconstructs the subject of portraiture.
